Happy Fathers Day 2016!

Happy Father’s Day to all the dads out there!
On this Father’s Day, the Londonderry Historical Sociey would like to remember one of our founding fathers. We owe a debt of gratitude to Mr. Melvin Watts, who became the first president of the Londonderry Historical Society and whose foresight helped in preserving so many of the artifacts the Society still owns and enjoys displaying today. In addition to his work with the Society, Mr. Watts also held the position of Londonderry town historian and curator of the Currier Gallery of Art, now the Currier Museum of Art, in Manchester, for many years.

For every purchase you made of a blue & gold reusable bag with the ‘good karma’ message on it at the Londonderry Hannaford store  during the month of APRIL, the Londonderry Historical Society received $2.00 per bag towards rebuilding the Reverend William Morrison House!   Thank you, Hannafords, and thank you all for supporting the Society through this fundraiser!

2016-2017 Executive Board

At the Londonderry Historical Society’s Annual Meeting in April, the membership voted unanimously to confirm the slate of nominees as the 2016-2017 Executive Board:  President – Roger Filio,  Vice President – John Savina,  Secretary – Sue Joudry,  Treasurer – David Colglazier.   It has been a pleasure serving as President of the Londonderry Historical Society for the past two years, and as I step down, I look forward to the seeing the new board accomplish great things!

We celebrate the New Hampshire Primary’s 100th Anniversary this year!

1977 ballot stampHosting the First-In-The-Nation Presidential Primary every four years means that we here in New Hampshire get to see, hear, and evaluate, up close and personal, all the candidates for President as they file into New Hampshire, fill the airwaves, go door-to-door, and meet us where we live, dine, drink, celebrate, shop, work, recreate, go to school, and on the street. The phone calls and media add to the full court press. But we are able to do our homework and go into the voting booth a well informed populace.

NH’s First-In-The-Nation Presidential Primary will be held on Tuesday, February 9, 2016. In Londonderry, voting will be in the Londonderry High School Gym from 7:00am to 8:00pm.

The Londonderry Historical Society will again have the opportunity to hold a bake sale in the gym lobby during voting hours. If you’d like to donate baked goods, you can do so individually wrapped (preferred) or whole. We usually sell our individually wrapped items for $1.00 each, so please package items accordingly. For whole items, please suggest a price. We also found that Kay’s ‘cupcakes in a mug’ did very well last year; normally frosted cupcakes aren’t as popular. Her creativity paid off!
We will also have a basket raffle that will again include a quart of Hank Peterson’s Maple Syrup. As you know, Mr. Peterson passed away in late December. He was a man that embodied all that is good about Londonderry and will be dearly missed. We will remember him fondly and his good works will forever be a part of Londonderry History.

The Londonderry Historical Society Christmas Party

Victorian basketAlthough the reservations for the Londonderry Historical Society Christmas Party were shaken up a bit in the last week beforehand, the annual party on Saturday night went on without a hitch. Glad that so many of our members (and guests) could attend and enjoy the delicious food and the festivities.

It was a time to catch up with some, stir the musical memories of others, and enjoy the company of all. A cute white elf from Meredith was the most Yankee Swapped gift of the night, with nips a close second, and guests got to take home a little bit of Londonderry.

Thank you all for your hard work and dedication to the Londonderry Historical Society, and however you celebrate this holiday season, I wish you joy and happiness, and a fruitful and healthy new year!
